Florence MacCarthy Reagh (1562-1640), fought for English in Desmond
War, wrote treatise on ancient Ireland while held in in Tower of London,
published 1858. Note also McCarthy Mór, whom John Mitchel calls
Aodh (Owen) Roe O’Neill’s ‘slippery lieutenant in Munster’
and an ‘able but treacherous chief’, and whose 500-page Life
and Letters of Florence McCarthy Mor he recommends as a source for
a new life of Hugh O’Neill. DNB
