shoemaker; contrib. Denis Hollands Belfast-based Ulsterman,
and Tipperary Leader, also Glasgow Free Press; contrib.
verse to Nation and other papers as Ossian and Ruadh [pseuds],
and also M.D. [initials reversed]; contrib. verse to Ulsterman (ed.,
Denis Holland, Belfast); contrib. Tipperary Leader and Glasgow
Free Press; joined Ulster Observer, ed. A. J. McKenna, finally
sub-editor; also Northern Star and Ulster Examiner with
McKenna; fined and jailed for contempt of court; started Belfast Vindicator,
and The Citizen (a weekly, and an evening paper); fnd. Peoples
Advocate in Monaghan, 1876; ed. Belfast Morning News, 1885-86;
sons and daughters also on paper staff; poems for Dundalk Democrat,
Peoples Advocate, and Northern Star; edited anthology,
The Red Hand of Ulster (Monaghan n.d.), whch includes six
poems by him with two others in a second series (Belfast); MP N. Monaghan,
