Life
1807-1873 [Robert Le Mesurier MClure; McClure], b. Main St., Wexford,
explorer; first lieut. on Rosss expedition to find Franklin [see
MClintock, supra]; 15 expeditions to Arctic with that object; Discovered
the North West Passage, which Franklin was seeking, on board Investigator,
1850, trapped in ice for two years; rescued by Cpt. Kellett; knighted,
and awarded £10,000 by parliament; served in Chinese waters; made admiral;
published Voyages, 2 vols. (1884). CAB DIB DIW
