servant and undermaid; appeared as Miranda in The Busybody (Haymarket
1755); acted in Bath and Richmond; drew large houses as Lady Townley in
Dublin; invited to Drury Lane by Garrick, 1764; orig. player of Lady Teazle
in Sheridan’s School of Scandal (1777); transferred to Covent Garden,
1782; absent from stage, 1790-97; last appeared, 1799; Shakespearian roles
incl. Portia, Beatrice, Desdemona, Olivia, and Ophelia; The Life of
