Life
1893-1973; b. near Moycullen Co. Galway, son of small farmer, ed. locally; joined the Irish Volunteers in 1913; reporter on the Galway Express in 1918, invented own Irish shorthand; joined The Irish Independent in Dublin, in 1922, reporting Irish politics; m. Ellen Wara, 1931, two daughters; Irish Academy of Letters Award, 1938; Irish Editor for Irish Independent, 1945; friendship with Máirtín Ó Cadhain from 1932, urging him leave the IRA to concentrate on writing; vols. of short stories incl. An Geall a Briseadh (Dublin 1938); Cruithneacht agus Ceannabháin (Dublin 1940); Or na h-Aithinne (1949); also Dán (Dublin 1973); Gan Baisteadh (1972), set of autobiographical recollections; As An nGéibheann (1972), containing letters written to him by Mairtín Ó Cadhain during the latter’s his internment, 1939-44.
