Thomas John Barnardo
   
Life
1845-1905; b. Dublin, son of furrier; evangelised in slums after
conversion during Protestant revival, 1862; trained as a medical missionary
in London; opened his first home for destitute boys in Stepney Causeway,
1870, inaugurating Dr. Barnardos Homes; in the 1990s these were
involved in a scandal concerning the drafting of boys to commonwealth
countries for labour. DIB
