[Gearóid Iarla] d.1398; 4th [properly 3rd] earl of Desmond; justiciar
of Ireland, 1367-9; son of Maurice Fitzthomas, first earl of Desmond;
generally styled Gerald Fitzmaurice; granted lands of deceased br. Maurice
on condition of marrying dg. of Earl of Ormonde; copy of amalgamation
with natives as justiciar; defeated and captured by Brian OBrien,
1369; upheld King Edward IIs authority in Munster; posthumously
described as witty and ingenious composer of Irish poetry.
