Life
1830-1895 [William John Fitzpatrick; commonly Fitz-Patrick]; b. 31 Aug., Thomas St., Dublin; ed. Clongowes; son of successful merchant and associate of O’Connell (Patrick Vincent, 1792-1865); wrote historical biographies, depending on his private income; achieved controversial fame with Who Wrote the Waverley Novels (1856), suggesting Sir Walter’s brother Thomas; devoted to Lord Edward Fitzgerald; wrote The Sham Squire (1866; 1872; 1895) which relates the betrayal of Lord Edward and exposes the Castle crew; sold 16,000 [var. 10,000] copies and is a source for much lore of 1798; also Life, Times and Contemporaries of Lord Cloncurry (1855); Lady Morgan (1860); Ireland before the Union (1870) [vars. 1863, 1867]; The Life, Times, and Correspondence of The Rt. Rev. Dr. Doyle [JKL] Bishop of Kildare, 2 vols. (Dublin: Duffy 1861), Do., enl. edn.
