Notes
Desmond Clarke, Ireland in Fiction: A Guide to Irish Novels,
Tales, Romances and Folklore [Pt. 2] (Cork: Royal Carbery 1985), notes
that his novel Mandeville, A Tale of the Seventeen Century in England
[3 vols] (Edin: Constable 1818), is narrated by one born in Charlemont,
Co. Armagh, in 1638, where his father was an officer under Lord Caulfield;
discusses misgovernment leading to Rebellion of 1641, beginning with little
bloodshed but developing into excesses; a Protestant parson who removes
a child from its Catholic mother is criticised.
