Life
See Stephen Watt, Joyce, O’Casey, and Irish Popular Theater (1991), Robert Johnston’s The Old Land, produced in Easter Week 1903, contained a rowdy pub-scene, and was censured by Irish critics for ‘display[ing] a tendency to follow in the line of the conventional stage Irishman and Irishwoman, a creation never popular among Irish audiences, and now perhaps less so than ever’ (Freeman’s Journal). [Watt, p.77.]
