[Col.] Thomas Dawson Lawrence
   
Life
?1730-?1810; grandson of Rt. Hon Henry Lawrence, President of
Council, 1655, to whom Milton addressed a sonnet; published works for
Sunday School at Lawrencetown, nr. Banbridge, Co. Down, where he lived;
schoolfellow of Goldsmith under Rev. Mr Hughes of Balymahon; distinguished
at Battle of Minden, leading 20th Regt.; MS notes refer to assault on
Lawrence by Hon. Pierce Butler who was tried on account of it, a report
appearing in 1792; first work addressed to Bishop Percy; a poem addressed
to Lawrence among Samuel Burdys works, with note praising Lawrences
trans. of Horace and Lydia as finest extant; Miscellaneous Works (Dublin
1789), verse, reprinted with omissions and additions, 1806; a copy of
the former in the BML containing MS notes. PI.
