John Nicholson

Life
1821-1857; b. Dublin; cadetship in Bengal Infantry, 1839; served in Afghanistan; imprisoned, but rescued by Sir George Pollock; accompanied Maharajah Gulab Singh to Kashmir, 1846; captain, 1848; distinguished and heroic soldier in the Sikh Wars; regarded as demi-god by natives, fakirs of Hazara establishing the worship of Nikkil Seyn, 1848; brigadier-gen. on ouotbreak of mutiny; disarmed sepoy regts.; destroyed mutineers en route to Delhi, at Trimmu Ghant and the Ravi river; reached Delhi and captured 14 guns from mutineers manoeuvring to get at British rear, 25 Aug. 1857; commanded main storming party in assault on Delhi, 14 Sept.; died from gunshot wound in chest; there is a monument in Newry town.
