George Philips
   
Life
?1599-1696; Irish writer and Gov. of Londonderry [Derry], inherited Sir
Thomass estate at Newtown Limavady; sent word to Derry garrison,
as recorded by the sheriffs of that city, received the first intelligence
of the general insurrection of the papists from our much honoured friend
George Philips Esq. (Treasury Papers, 19th Jan. 1688-89);
Philips resigned his Governorship to Lundy, and acted as an intermediary
with King William, carrying a letter which decided the town against surrender;
he wrote The Interest of England in the Preservation of Ireland, humbly
presented to the Parliament of England, a quarto pamphlet (15 July
1689), and other papers. He was ruined by the war, his house being burned;
