var. 1770 DNB]; b. Cork; wine merchant trading out of Bordeaux; imprisoned
in France during the Revolution and narrowly escaped the gilloutine; left
France, 1797; est. bank in Cork, 1800; suspended payment, 1819; commercial
and parliamentary agent for Cork, Youghal and Limerick, 1819-26; joined
National Bank of Ireland as local director at Cork, 1832-53; contrib.
to Gentlemans Magazine and Dublin Review, his articles
being published in limited edition of 100 called Critical and Miscellaneous
Essays by an Octogenarian (n.d.)CAB DNB

Dictionary of National Biography comments that his articles evinced much literary taste.
Name-sake: Justin McCarthy, gen. ed., Irish Literature (Washington: University of America 1904), lists a James Jeffrey Roche, b. Ireland in mid-19th c.; moved to Prince Edward Island in infancy; spent most of his mature life in Boston; extract from Ballads of Blue Water; also cites Her Majesty the King, The Kearsage, and other works.
