1851-1929 [Miss Flora Louisa; later Lady Lugard]; b. Dublin, dg. British
general; ed. privately; rebelled against family in early 1880s, worked
with W. T. Stead on Pall Mall Gazette, and later with him on The
Times, becoming head of colonial dept.; special journalistic commissions
throughout the Empire; m. Sir Frederick Lugard, colonial admin.; refugee
work in WWI; Castle Blair (1878), successfully recalls her Irish
childhood and won Ruskins enthusiastic praise (good ... lovely
... true ... noble ... noble); lively romances incl. Hector
(1883), for Young People; A Sea Change (1885); Colonel Cheswicks
Campaign (1886), domestic repercussions of war in Egypt. SUTH
