throughout the Empire; m. Sir Frederick Lugard, colonial admin.; refugee
work in WWI; Castle Blair (1878), successfully recalls her Irish
childhood and won Ruskin’s enthusiastic praise (‘good ... lovely
... true ... noble ... noble’); lively romances incl. Hector
(1883), for Young People; A Sea Change (1885); Colonel Cheswick’s
