Life
fl.1640; 2nd Viscount Taaffe and 1st Earl of Carlingford; grandson of
Sir William Taaffe (d.1627), sheriff of Galway, who distinguished himself
against the Spanish at Kinsale and in expeditions against the Irish; commanded
Confederation forces in Connacht, 1644; in Munster, 1647; defeated by
Lord Inchiquin, 1647; negotiator between Queen Henrietta Maria and the
Duke of Lorraine; earl of Carlingford at the Restoration. DNB
