1732-1807; b. England, lived as actor, Dublin 1758-62 and 1767; quitted
stage, 1768; taught in Kensington, 1769-71; travelling lecturer; convert
to Roman Catholicism; projected his pronouncing dictionary, 1774, and
published it as Critical Pronouncing Dictionary, Rules Addressed to
Citizens of Scotland, Ireland and London (1791); also wrote text-books
and English grammar; encouraged by Dr. Johnson and Edmund Burke, et al.
