Ebenezer Rider 1736 Edn.): ‘Nicholas Walsh, Bishop of Ossory, writ
Learned Sermons in Latin, yet extant in his own Hand Writing. He also
attempted the translation of the New Testament, into Irish about the Year1573,
but his Design was Prevented by a horrid Murther committed on him in 1585.’

Minister of St. Werburgh’s from 1571 to 1577 and subseq. Bishop of
Ossory, was the first to introduce Irish types ... Queen Elizabeth, at
her own expense, having provide a printing press and a fount of Irish
letters ‘in the hope that God in his mercy would raise up some to
translate the New Testament into their mother tongue.’ [Gilbert, Hist of Dublin, I, 29]
