Life
?-1700; draughtsman, b. Waterford, son of Alderman; early life otherwise
unknown; trained in Paris, under Boucher and Vanloo [viz. Charles Van
Loo] acc. John OKeeffes Recollections (1826); est.
drawing school in Georges Lane, and later appointed master of RDS
drawing school at Shaws Court, in 1757; mentally deranged in 1763
and replaced by Jacob Ennis, but restored to health and retained his post
until his death; his son Francis Robert succeeded him, and was succeeded
by Robert Lucius. DIB.

[Catalogue] (1969), p.44, cites his Drawing Schol in Georges Lane
[sic], founded in the 1740s and taken over by the RDS mid 1740s; Pasquin
says of him, He principally excelled in his drawing of the human
figure in chalk and crayons; no drawing by him is known. [NOTE error
in DIB regarding Enniss death].
